If your child is exposed to two languages at the same time, your goal should be to strengthen their reading skills in their native language while supporting their learning of reading in the second language. In other words, you should read bilingually. But what if you’re not fluent in the second language? No problem! Everything you know about reading in your native language can be applied to reading in the second language. The sounds represented by letters in both languages may differ, but the purpose of reading as a recreational and educational activity remains the same, regardless of the code. Reading is much more than just knowing the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. Reading is a complex process achieved by developing in a balanced and integrated way: Phonological awareness Phonics Vocabulary Fluency And most importantly, comprehension In this micro-workshop, I want to teach you practical strategies so you can learn to read bilingually with your children, even if you’re not fluent in the second language.
